ABSTRACT

The well-known features such as multi-homing and multi-streaming allow the devices to establish more than one path for data transmission from one endpoint to another endpoint. The protocol that provides such feature is called the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). The advanced version of this protocol is called CMT SCTP. Due to simultaneous data transfer using CMT-SCTP, the unordered data packets arrival is very common. When a message is divided into data units, there are high chances of out-of-sequence data at the receiving device. This data needs to be reassembled at the receiver to get the original message. This process is time consuming and makes the data transmission slow because some of the data units are missing. Other option is to drop the some of the received data units and send a signal to the sender for the retransmission of the unordered data. For that CMT-SCTP uses different parameters and based on these parameters it retransmits the data to the receiver.
In this thesis different retransmission policies are discuss and implemented in NS2. The retransmission policies mainly focus on the congestion control, slow start threshold and the loss rate. From the simulation results, the retransmission policy that uses loss rate parameter for the transmission of data outperforms the retransmission policy that uses parameters such as congestion window and the slow start threshold.
