ABSTRACT
Increasing demand of bandwidth has given rise to the modern high speed computer
networks. WiMAX, defined by the IEEE 802.16 standard, is one of leading broadband
technology that aims to provide high speed Internet access. With its mobility version,
WiMAX also supports mobility among the devices. WiMAX, however, still faces
some of the challenges; one of them is related to the implementation of a proper
queuing mechanism at the MAC layer. Since the scheduling mechanism for WiMAX
has left undefined in the standard, it is an open research topic. Several Researchers
have suggested various queueing mechanisms by using different simulation tools and
techniques, and many of them have been implemented by the WiMAX vendors.
Different types of Internet applications have different bandwidth requirements and,
therefore, various mobile Internet users demand for their due share on transmission
channel in order to have an efficient and effective communication.. This requires an
adaptive and efficient queuing mechanism that could also support multiple data
services running concurrently. Delay in the scheduling process, throughput and
priorities of data service are important aspects for any queuing algorithm. A fair
queuing policy with less delay and good throughput is indeed a need of mobile
WiMAX networks.
This thesis work implements and evaluates different queuing mechanisms against the
above mentioned parameters. For a test drive purpose, two common queuing
mechanisms namely round robin & equiprobable have been assessed and compared
on the designed MATLAB based simulation that shows round robin has better
performance than equiprobable in terms of more throughput and less delay, while
both mechanisms have almost same service priorities. In order to verify the results,
statistical significance based future prediction model has been designed which also
confirms the above mentioned results. The designed test bed could be used to evaluate
any queuing mechanism and could also be customized for uplink and downlink
Queueing mechanisms for both mesh and point-to-multipoint WiMAX networks.
