ABSTRACT

Structural engineers have always been researching for the accommodation which could meet the basic requirements of the occupants. Increasing population in urban areas where there is already shortage of land has developed the ideas for constructing tall buildings. An economical type of tall building consisting of shear walls and coupling slabs termed as shear wall building is at present more commonly being constructed to a greater all over the world for official, commercial, industrial, residential purpose. Many investigators have been contributing a lot since last more than four decades on the different aspects of the problems of analysis and design of the tall building subjected to considerable lateral loads e.g. wind, earthquake, etc, in addition to gravity loads. Lateral loads acting along the length of such a building are not usually a problem in design, but when they act across the width of building their effect becomes more significant. The effect of lateral loads results in the rotation of walls and it becomes more pronounced with the increase in the height of building. In this study a tall building consisting of 50 storeys of height 150 meters subjected to wind loading is analysed and designed. The tall building is analysed as shear wall building consisting of shear walls with coupling slabs to resist the lateral as well as gravity loads. There are so many methods to analyse such type of building and more data is made available from research work carried out by different investigators in different parts of the world but in this study a tall building is subjected to wind load is analysed by Continuous connection method and Coull &
Irwin method.
The design of a slab subjected to a wide variation of magnitude of moments due to wind is a major problem so it is not possible to find the distribution of moments using conventional methods because all methods which were explained earlier have been proposed only to find magnitude but not their distribution. In this study charts prepared by Memon.M [9] for rapid determination of design moments in connecting slabs due to lateral load are used. In this study shear force and bending moment in
