General note ABSTRACT

The recent developments in the electrical power system have brought the attention of the electric utilities and the consumers to the power quality. The electrical power quality deteriorates due to the non-linear and the sensitive loads. The non-linear and sensitive loads cause the Power Quality Disturbances (PQDs) such as voltage sag. voltage swell, harmonics, flickers, and transients. These disturbances affect the signals of the power systems of the utility and customers alike. In order to protect the power distributed network, the detection of the PQDs i n the distribution system is an important task. Most of the disturbances are non- stationary and transitory in nature hence it requires advanced tools and techniques for the analysis of PQ disturbances Besides, the development in the Digital Signal Processing techniques has made the task of correctly analyzing and describing the changes in the waveforms of voltage and current much effective and efficient. In order to correctly investigate and assess the different aspects of PQDs, the Wavelet Transform Technique has been used and implemented. Before applying the Wavelet Transform
Technique for mitigating the disturbances, the sources and the causes of the disturbances must be known. In this research , a novel control scheme of mitigating the voltage sag and swell in electrical power distribution system has been used. Th is scheme is popularly known as custom power device i.e. D-STATCOM. D-STATCOM injects current into the system to correct the voltage sag and swell. To analyze the performance of D-STATCOM, results have have been presented in this research. The performance of D-STATCOM is further controlled by implementing the Wavelet Transform Technique which is based on the Multi Resolution Analysis (MRA) algorithm. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), which is purely digitalized, based on the Multi-Resolution signal decom position (MSD). analyzes the signal at different frequencies with various resolutions. therefore, could observe any transient in time domain as well as in frequency domain. The proposed methodology states that the distorted signal is first identified, decomposed and then reconstructed using wavelet transform.
