General note ABSTRACT<br/><br/>The streaming of video service, either live or video on-demand streaming is in receipt of remarkable attraction from the users and industry. The ISPs nowadays provide the smart TV access over the Internet connectivity, where the users can access real-time contents adjoining to the trendy contents like email/web browsing and downloading. The multimedia applications, specifically video streaming contains delay, bandwidth and packets loss requirements. The congestion over the network is a critical factor that creates packets loss and increases delay values, consequently the quality of streaming video is degraded. In this thesis, evaluation of the video streaming has been performed by applying different simulation scenarios over IP-based network. The core objective is to analyse the network behaviour and video quality. The network behaviour includes packets loss, end-to-end delay and throughput. The received video quality is compared and analysed using application level values, which include Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) method and Mean Opinion Score (MOS) scale. In this research work, each experiment performed in simulation shows different network behaviour and quality of received video depending on the network congestion and dummy background traffic transmitted over the network. The results show that the higher compression of raw video produces the poor video quality, while the delay parameter and the achieved throughput are reduced. The packets loss values are network-dependent, which includes network congestion, bandwidth and the traffic that is transmitted over the network. The higher compressed videos can be used by the low-bandwidth and highly congested networks. It has been analysed that the increased bandwidth cannot deal with the packet loss and network congestion, because the Internet is "Best-effort" network. The entire traffic travels over the network is treated equally, while the • users interested in the video streaming service face the video quality issues due to packet loss and network congestion. The traffic prioritization and bandwidth reservation mechanisms can be useful for the specific users of video streaming services.<br/>
