General note ABSTRACT

Bricks have been considered a major construction component in the construction of buildings and other civil engineering projects. Mostly the load bearing elements are composed of bricks, particularly in rural areas of the country. However, performance of bricks has always been dubious due of the lack of quality control; because of manufacturing of the clayey bricks is undertaken in the kilns and the clamps situated in the rural areas, which are not mechanically controlled. Further the source material of the brick is soil that is normally obtained from the near-by vicinity of the kilns. Thus, performance of bricks is not uniform. Subsequently, the study is focused on the quality assessment of the clay bricks produced in the rural areas of Sindh province. For this purpose, five kilns were selected in the vicinity of district au Naushahro Feroze. Brick samples and the source soil samples were collected from each kiln. Various properties of soil and bricks were investigated. Comparisons of these properties were made among the bricks obtained from five kilns. Obtained properties were then compared with respective values given by Pakistan.
Standards. The study revealed a substantial variation in the different properties of the
bricks obtained from these kilns.
Bricks collected from various kilns sites were above standard in dimensions by 13% in length and 20% in width and sub-standard in depth by 24%. Efflorescence depositions were not observed in bricks of any company. Surprisingly none of bricks satisfied A-grade and B-grade categories of PS-208 and only one brick company complied with C-grade of the standard. It is concluded that the quality control system is necessary to maintain the manufacturing of the bricks. it is therefore suggested that manufacturing of bricks may be carried out under government agency to inspect the manufacturing process of brick and maintain the quality of bricks.
