General note ABSTRACT

Solar water distillation is one of best methods for water purification which remove salts through evaporation of water. Concentrated solar distillation is preferred against other conventional methods due to higher temperature acquirements. A line concentrated solar distillation unit was fabricated, assembled and installed in the Energy and Environment Engineering Department, QUEST Nawabshah, Sindh, Pakistan. A total of five locations were selected from Nawabshah city were selected for taking of groundwater samples and distillation. The quality_ of feed water samples and distilled water was examined and performance of concentrator was evaluated using batch flow, continuous flow without and with tracking and the cost of distilled water was determined and compared with other researchers. The results revealed that all quality parameters distilled water samples were within World Health Organization standards. The average inlet temperature of feed water during analysis was between 33.0°C and 58.0°C, and outlet temperature was from 102°C to 109.0°C, and the condenser temperature was within the range of 33.0 C to 70.0°C. The average yield per day of distilled water obtained from the installed unit for batch flow was found.
3.83 liters, continuous flow without tracking was 4.94 liters, and continuous flow with tracking was 5.60 liters. Likewise, the predicted lifetime distilled water production of installed unit for batch flow was found to be 13609 liters, for continuous flow without tracking 19723 liters, and for continuous flow with tracking 217Q4 liters. The continuous flow with tracking was found as the best method for production of distilled water from line focusing concentrated distillation units. Furthermore, the estimated total life cycle cost of the fabricated unit was about PKR 60,940.00 , with the capital cost of PKR 44,860 .00. Whereas, the estimated operational and maintenance cost with net present value is about PKR 13,873.00, and non-recurring cost around PKR 3,411.00 with a salvage value of PKR 1,204.00. The cost of distilled water per liter obtained from the fabricated unit is found to be in the range of PKR 6.00 to PKR 9.00 from continuous flow with tracking mechanism and batch flow method respectively. This work can be extended using spray nozzle at heat exchanger inlet, automation of system components and applying programmable logic controller or microcontroller for regulating and controlling tracking system and development of salt removal technique from the absorber tube of the concentrator.
