| General note | ABSTRACT

In construction industry concrete plays an important role but it has low
efficiency to sustain tensile stresses, brittle mode of failure, cracks
propagation etc. To overcome these problems ordinary steel reinforcement is
most popular mechanism which is being used: in addition to that, various
types of fibers are being used, after extensive research.
This research study focuses on the use of jute fibers extracted from used
burlaps in concrete with different proportions to improve the strength of
plain concrete, a number of specimen were cast to study indirect tensile and
compressive strength behavior.
The concrete mix was prepared with the addition of jute fibers by dry weight
with 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0%, and 3.5%. Test results show
that compressive strength of concrete increases up to 30.67% . With the
addition of jute fibers from 0.5% to 2.0%. Whereason further addition of
jute fibers in the mix, the compressive strength of concrete decreases.
Indirect Tensile strength test results shows that tensile strength of concrete
increases up to 24.12% with the addition of jute fibers from 0.5 % to 2.0%
'*here as on further addition of jute fibers the tensile strength of concrete
It was found that workability of concrete mix decreases with the addition of
jute fibers more than 1.5%.
However the optimum fiber content seems to be 1.5% as that proportion
improves compressive strength up to 28.46%, while tensile strength up to
21.86% as compared to virgin concrete and mix remain workable.

xiv
|
