General note

ABSTRACT

There is increasing trend lo use of supplementary cementitious materials in the concrete and mortar in order to improve their performance. A wide variety of the agricultural wastes and industrial by-products are adopted for the purpose. Silica fume (SF) is a by product of Ferro-silicon industry. It is highly reactive material resulting in high strength h when used in concrete as binding material along with cement. It has gained wide acceptance to use in the concrete, particularly in high strength concrete. it also improves the durability of the concrete and mortar. This experimental investigation focuses on the use of silica fume in mortars with ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The silica fume is added as partial replacement of cement by weight. The replacement level is from 5% to 20% with an increment of 5% by weight of the total weight of cement/ binder. The mortars of different proportions (binder: sand) were prepared. The proportions were I :I , I :1.5 and I :2. Entire the specimens were cast with fixed w/c ratio being 0.5 and cured in water. Jn addition a batch of normal mortar with ordinary Portland cement is also cast and tested to compare the results. All the specimens are tested at 28 days. The effectiveness of the si lica fume is investigated in terms of compressive strength, flexural strength and tensile strength. The results reveal that the addition of silica fume as cementitious material in the mortar remarkably improves all the three strength properties investigated. However, its effectiveness is enormous in case of the tensi le strength followed by t he flexural strength and compressive strength respectively.
