General note ABSTRACT

DPW Port Muhammad bin Qasim is located at marginal wharves 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 of Port Qasim. At this facility, office buildings, engineering workshops, cargo handling, harbor cranes, hundreds of cargo loading and unloading transports, etc. are available. All these facilities in one way or the other require fresh water, including drinking water. In the result wastewater is generated and the same has to be released into the Arabian Sea.
In this study Wastewater treatment system of DPW, Port Muhammad Bin Qasim, studied and analyzed. The purpose of study was to evaluate the system performance and the environmental impacts of wastewater, treatment efficiency of the system.
Comprehensive literature review was conducted for this thesis. Numerous books, practical experiences, laboratory methods and reports, were investigated in order to get the required information.
Resultant wastewater parameters were compared with NEQS standard limits for effluent discharges into sea. In addition to the above study, considering the obtained results of analysis, for the possible improvements in treatment plant for maximum treatment efficiency were further suggested.
Wastewater samples from sources were collected and chemically analyzed in laboratory for the study. Parameters for the targeted study such as color, BODs,COD'TSS'TDS'pH' toxic chemical metals' oil and grease were evaluated.
Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and MLSS were monitored and analyzed by installed devices at plant.

The results of the collected samples at the inlet are considerably higher than the
NEQS. Particularly, the samples collected from S2 and S3 shows considerably higher results, i-e. BOD5 is 944 mil, COD is 2547 mg/L, TSS is 672 mg/l and oil &
grease is 25 mg/l, in comparison to the specified NEQS standards.

The existing treatment facility is not sufficiently capable to treat this wastewater that is why the treated wastewater still shows higher values in comparison to the NEQS. This study concludes that the efficiency of the treatment plant may be improved and then treated water may be reused for plantation or irrigation of plants.
