500 _aABSTRACT In networks, the transport layer protocols play a very important role by identifying and differentiating different applications through process numbers. For this layer, the reliability, congestion and flow control are the main challenges. The IETF's emerging proposition for the adaption of multipath transmission for the efficient network resource utilization has posed challenges for TCP, SCTP and DCCP. One of the development by researchers is Multipath TCP (MPTCP) that allows a user to use multiple data flows simultaneously to increase the bandwidth and try to provide better load -balancing among flows due to fair coupled congestion control. This thesis evaluates MPTCP, DCCP and TCP protocols by using NS-2 simulator. Different simulations are carried in order to analyze the performance of MPTCP under different network parameters. The results of simulation show that MPTCP outperforrns DCCP and TCP in each proposed scenario. On the basis of results, MPTCP increases throughput and minimizes the delay but it utilizes more network bandwidth. However DCCP slightly achieves higher throughput than TCP due to its fast unreliable data flow.
