500 _aABSTRACT This study investigated the English language needs of students enrolled in the undergraduate engineering programme at Quaid-E-Awam University of Engineering Science, and Technology, Sindh Pakistan, and evaluated the current Writing and Communication Skills Course provided to assist them meet their academic and professional needs. It used questionnaires to seek the perspectives of the currently y enrolled final year students from Civil Engineering Department, and English teachers of ELC. Course documents from two other universi11es m the context of engineering m Pakistan and QU EST were analysed as well as two textbooks on English for engineering to sec the extent to which the content and methodology of the WCS was based on the principles of ESP for engineering professionals. The main findings of the study were that students' specific needs were not being met, that all three courses surveyed were more genera l than speci fic academic purposes courses and t hat only the international textbook offered a course that was t ruly specific to the language needs of engineers. Implication s of the findings for the study 111 terms of improvements to content and methodology for the WCS course tn QUEST Pakistan arc outlined m the Final section of the study.
