One of the popular networks is the LAN, where the device are connected to each other through a centralized device. However, in many institutes and business firms, one LAN is not sufficient and the subnetting is required. The task of subnetting can be performed with the help of a router. However, the routers are expensive, inflexible, restricted to a limited area. Moreover the routers are slower when compared with the layer 2 devices such as a switch. The subnetting can be performed at the layer 2 by means of virtual LAN (VLAN). VLAN is collections of computers within one building that communicate over a one physical data connection. It is the logical division of devices i n order to group the devices. In this study, the performance evaluation is performed between two types of VLAN networks called the Default VLAN and Data VLAN. The performance is evaluated by using OPNET simulator with different parameters that includes traffic sent, received and packet dropped ratio. The study show that Default V LAN is working better than no VLAN due to aging of filtering database entries. The large traffic exists in the network without VLANs, since any communication between different groups is allowed. When using VLANs, the devices only broadcast to the members of one group. It improves the bandwidth utilization, security and the administration by supporting a virtual organization. The data VLAN shows highest traffic sent as compared to the Defau lt VLAN. The final results show that the Data VLAN works efficiently than other type of VLAN. aDepartment of Information Technology uhttps://tinyurl.com/3sdmsnw2 cTHESIS 00104070aRESEARCHbRESEARCHd2018-10-22l0pMP/37-398r2018-10-22 00:00:00yTHESIS 00104070aRESEARCHbRESEARCHd2019-02-27l0pMP/39-427r2019-02-27 00:00:00yTHESIS
