Jinnah Barrage is the 1st Diversion Structure on River Indus, near Kalabagh Town. It is 126 miles downstream of Tarbela Dam. The Barrage was constructed during 2nd World War and commissioned in 1946 to divert water on left side into Thal Canal for irrigating lands in Districts Mianwali, Khushab, Bhakkar, Layyah & Muzaffargarh. Five million people are dependent on its water supplies. Indus River is main source of water for cultivation and also feeds water for drinking and other purpose to the millions of people in Pakistan. Indus River observe floods in monsoon season and dries in winter. There are number of barrages built over Indus to regulate and distribute the water for cultivation and drinking purpose through canals. It is difficult to monitor and regulate the water flow with manual control system in case of sudden floods and no water in dry season. Implementation of new technology could help us to monitor the water flows and control the water flows from barrages and we can already plan and predict the flows from Indus basin. In this way we can avoid from sudden floods and can manage flood water. Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system could be one of the solution. SCADA system can help us to remotely monitor the flows as well as archive the pattern of water flows for proper distribution of water. Only two barrages in Pakistan are automized and Jinnah Barrage is the third one which is automized with SCADA system. In this study the Implementation of SCADA system on Jinnah Barrage has been studied and analysis and its benefits has been compared with manual system. Automatic and manual Gate operation to ensure safe water flows through the Barrage. Barrage alarm situations will be instantly reported and auto/manual actions be taken to recover the situation back to normal.
