The world has been heading for renewable resources because of scarcity of conventional resources for power generation and environmental impacts associated with them. At present in power engineering, wind power potential is at the top among the different renewable energy resources, owing to its sustainability and cost effectiveness. Howe er. it i the well-known fact that the wind is extremely unpredictable, hence variable speed DFIG-based WECS offer numerous advantages against the fixed squirrel cage induction generators, for instance less power electronic convertor rating, le loses, less cost and because of that an enhanced efficiency uncomplicated implementation of power factor correction equipment,
inconsistent speed operation and four quadrants reactive power and active power control capability.
Hence. in this the is fault characteristics analysis and electrical performance investigation of the airable speed DFIG-based wind turbines has been carried out. The PSCADIE TDC software is used for simulation to analyze, study and to evaluate the electrical performance of the DFIG and diverse factors disturbing its operation. The extensive literature review has been carried out. Deliberately, fault (symmetrical fault and unsymmetrical fault) has been introduced on the collection line of the model under study. The DFIG is directly connected to the main grid however it possess a power electronic convertor which is connected between the generator rotor windings and the main grid, which require to be protected during short circuit faults. The majority of protection schemes which have been proposed are crowbar. The crowbar protection in a straight line affects the operational mode of the generator, which can show the way to different fault characteristics. Thus, the different faults characteristic has been analyzed while the protection system (Crowbar) is connected or disconnected. Not only this but electrical performance (currents of healthy phase and faulty phase, rotor speed, active power, reactive power, etc.) has also been investigated at turbine side and at grid side.
