A BSTRACT

Natural clayey soils are mostly stabilized by mixing them with certain materials, such as cement, lime, or similar products, so that they acquire the necessary properties for civil works. Some industrial by-products can also be used for this purpose. Marble Dust is one of those. Marble industry produces large amounts of waste marble in fonn of dust (powder) and it causes environmental problems. Marble dust is being tried as constituent
in the production of concrete, mortar and grout.
During this study an experimental investigation is conducted to use marble dust as a stabilizer in natural clayey soil existing in Nawabsbah Pakistan. For this purpose the soil samples were collected from the premises of QUEST Nawabshah. The marble dust was obtained from the marble workshops of local market where it was produced during cutting and grinding processes of the marble i n desired shapes. The marble dust was added in terms of the percentage of the tolnl weight of the soil being 4%, &%, 12%, 16% and 20%. The effectiveness of the marble dust in soil as stabilizer was exam ined in terms of various properties of soil by conducting the different tests such as, particle size distribution, consistency limits (liquid limit and plastic limit), AASHTO classification, moisture-density relationship (Modified proctor's compaction test), shear box test and free swell ratio. The bearing capacity of all the soil samples was also calculated. In addition all the tests were conducted for the soil without marble dust in order to compare the results. The encouraging results have been obtained and a significant improvement is observed in almost all the properties of soil investigated during this study due to addition
of marble dust is soil. The results revealed that the marble dust may be considered as
Potential stabilizer of relatively poor soils like clayey soil existing in the vicinity of Nawabshah.
