  <note>ABSTRACT

The world is looking at the use of advanced materials and almost all the fields of engineering
Nowadays. The same trend is observed in field or construction engineering in order
the performance of construction materials One of the areas is to use silica fume (S.F) as
a cementations material the cement to produce high performance concrete. SF is a
byproduct from ferro -silicon industry, It is believed that the use of silica fume in concrete a
partial replacement not only increases the strength of concrete but its durability also. The use of
SF also facilitates the disposal of industrial otherwise it needs a lot of the area to be
dumped and also causing the environmental hazardous effects. This experimental study is
undertaken to investigate the effect of silica fume on the strength properties of concrete when it
is used as a partial replacement. The silica fume was used from 0-20% by total weight of cement
with an increment of 2.5%. The concrete was produced with the ratio of I with w/c ratio of
0.48 and 0.50. The specimens of standard size were cast and tested at 28-days age. The
Effectiveness of S.F was investigated in terms of compressive and tensile strength of concrete.
The results were compared to those of concrete without S.F. The results revealed that the
Compressive and tensile strength of concrete adequately enhances with the use of SF.
